Inside the National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology (NITMB) from Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, what appears to be a simple lighting design is actually the result of intensive coordination and meticulous integration. The exposed ceiling created a significant challenge, requiring an inventive approach to fit fixtures around extensive piping and suspended panels. To provide visual separation across the open-plan interior, the GGLD team incorporated decorative pendants— including featured zones of large hanging globes seamlessly integrated into a suspended acoustical ceiling grid.

To maintain consistent vertical illumination, a custom curved pendant traces the interior core walls, delivering uniform light to each common-area breakout space and ensuring all chalkboards are evenly illuminated.

Throughout the corridors, layered lighting creates height and depth through flexible track systems that provide indirect illumination, adjustable accents for artwork, and targeted downlighting for circulation. In the large auditorium, we navigated another layer of complexity: installing linear fixtures within limited ceiling depth between narrow wood baffles, all while carefully coordinating around projectors, speakers, microphones, and AV equipment.

The result is a highly technical, deeply integrated lighting solution that appears simple and streamlined. By embracing the building’s structural constraints, our team developed creative solutions that support user needs and enhance the architecture. Seamless, unobtrusive, and adaptable, the final design delivers optimal lighting for an educational environment.
