Perkins Coie

  • Location: Chicago, IL
  • Architect: Nelson
  • Project Size: 100,000 SF
  • Project Completion: 2020
  • Photographer: Tom Harris

Partnering with a longtime interior design collaborator, we created a modern, open environment that lends personality to every corner of the new Perkins Coie space. We focused primarily on cove lighting, which allowed us to achieve a light, bright atmosphere throughout. This was especially notable in our design for the building’s multifunctional lobby and conference space. By avoiding the oppressive lighting often found in offices, we contributed a soft and breezy feeling to this flexible space that serves as the hub of the new workplace. Our team got creative with additional lighting, taking inspiration from museum galleries and hospitality spaces to introduce indirect light and visual interest, even in “in-between” places like corridors and out-of-the-way alcoves. By balancing natural and electric light and straying away from harsh downlighting, we achieved a consistent, modern, and approachable feel across the entire building.
