United Airlines O’Hare Gate of the Future

  • Location: Chicago, IL
  • Architect: IA Interior Architects
  • Project Completion: 2022
  • Photographer: Patsy McEnroe Photography

Working within the existing lighting framework, our team brought new life to this airline’s gates and holdrooms. Intricate details, such as strips of blue LEDs around individual kiosks, set the area apart from the typically sterile airport aesthetic. Our design team worked to create a sculptural lighting piece consisting of lit and unlit tubes, which greets travelers as they enter Terminal C and distinguishes the lounge seating from the rest of the bustling gate activity. Uniquely shaped indirect and direct pendants were also hung above the lounge. Lastly, we finessed the existing fixture that stretches the length of the gate’s ceiling, installing energy-efficient LEDs to provide clean, white uplight that blends seamlessly with the available daylight.
