Located in the iconic North Shore Congregation Israel synagogue, Frank and Crown Halls demonstrate the beauty that can be achieved through holistic and focused design. We collaborated with the architectural team to completely redesign the ceilings of both spaces with the lighting design as the focus, transforming previously flat expanses into elegant curvatures with integrated cove uplights. The ceiling of Frank Hall is especially symbolic, emulating the shape of a menorah as its illuminated coves lead guests into the stunning temple beyond. The eye is especially drawn to the 15.5′ DIA luminous stretched-canvas fixture nestled into the central, gold-painted cove.
In Crown Hall, the elongated curves and oval-shaped ceiling cove reflect the existing historic architecture of the temple, while the lighting strategy introduces modern functionality to the space. Vertical perimeter illumination and curtain grazers provide additional light, with one-inch downlights arranged in a starfield pattern to create a captivating focal point. The room’s programmable lighting scenes offer versatility for various events, including a magical “starfield only” setting that fosters an enchanting atmosphere for children’s storytime.
