The architectural fabric of Chicago’s Old Post Office was integrated into an open concept office for this technology client. During the transformation of this expansive historic space, we integrated lighting as a method of placemaking, wayfinding, and play. To promote interaction on a human scale, our design introduces varying forms and undulating curves that guide visitors to their destinations, with gathering spaces along the way indicated by lighting cues. Extensive research and calculations were conducted to ensure overall visual comfort, technical rating, and energy consumption to achieve LEED Silver and WELL certification. Additionally, we reduced daylight glare from existing full-length windows through the use of fritted linear fixtures. To provide maximum comfort for occupants, office spaces were lit with cool LEDs, while casual lounge spaces sport warmer decorative lighting.
